Every nine minutes someone is diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, an incurable neurodegenerative disorder that causes tremors; slowness of movement and speech; and impaired balance and coordination. More Americans are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease than with multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy and ALS combined. {facts about Parkinson’s} Thankfully there is a wonderful nonprofit organization, Dallas Area Parkinsonism Society {DAPS}, that is dedicated to impacting and improving the lives of those affected by this disease. DAPS serves as a resource for the Parkinson’s community by providing education, speech and exercise classes, and support groups. These important programs and services are all provide free of charge thanks to memberships, donations and fundraisers. I enjoyed getting to spend some time at their Garland location documenting their speech and exercise class that you can check out in the video and images below. They are such a wonderful group of volunteers and members. If you know someone that could benefit from these services, I highly recommend that you check out DAPS groups page to see a listing of class times and locations throughout Dallas and surrounding areas.
Get Involved. As a local, independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, DAPS depends on memberships and other donations in order to provide services at no cost to those affected by Parkinson’s disease. They do not receive funding from any national Parkinson’s organization or the government. Please visit their website to learn more about how you can support DAPS in their mission. And don’t forget to share this post using the social media buttons below to help bring awareness to this wonderful organization.
Many thanks to DAPS and to all of their members for sharing their afternoon with me! And a very special thanks to all of the supporters who have made these Love Capture Give® donated sessions possible by purchasing sessions through Tressavent Photography.
I also had the pleasure of photographing the DAPS Executive Director, Michael L. “Mike” Miles after their Holiday Luncheon. Thanks to the hard work of the DAPS staff, Board of Directors, Advisory Council and volunteers they will continue to make great strides in the the Parkinson’s community.
